Set within an established neighborhood, this home was designed to feel both modern and familiar. Textured materials root it in its surroundings, giving the exterior depth and character while maintaining a quiet, respectful presence along the street. A refined mix of smooth plaster, shou sugi ban charred wood, and taupe-colored corrugated metal siding creates a layered, tactile palette that feels both contemporary and grounded.
This project involved a major remodel and the addition of a second floor. The existing plan was thoughtfully opened and reorganized to improve flow and functionality, transforming compartmentalized spaces into a more connected and livable layout. The new upper level expands the home’s footprint without overwhelming it—the massing carefully shaped so the structure feels anchored to the site. It touches the ground with intention, then gently weaves upward to form the second story. As it rises, it creates a balcony that overlooks the preserved pepper trees in the front yard, framing them as a daily focal point and tying the architecture to the landscape.
Inside, the home shifts to a minimal yet warm expression. Clean lines and a restrained material palette create a calm backdrop for everyday life. The entry unfolds into a volumetric space that draws natural light deep into the heart of the home, establishing an immediate sense of openness and connection. The result is a residence that seamlessly blends into its neighborhood while offering renewed light, clarity, and modern comfort.
